Thu Dau Mot Market

Located in the heart of Thu Dau Mot Ward, Ho Chi Minh City, Thu Dau Mot Market is one of the oldest and busiest markets in the region. With a history spanning over 200 years, the market embodies Southern Vietnamese culture through its unique French architecture and bustling trading atmosphere. Here, visitors can experience a blend of tradition and modernity in each stall and diverse culinary corner. It proudly stands as a cultural meeting point rich in the identity of Thu Dau Mot.

Thu Dau Mot Market originated from Phu Cuong Market, which appeared around 1828 on the banks of the Saigon River. At that time, the Phu Cuong area was still undeveloped with abundant oil palm forests; the early market was formed from a small canal along the riverbank, where boats frequently came to exchange goods. In 1889, when Thu Dau Mot province was established, Phu Cuong Market officially became Thu Dau Mot Provincial Market. Throughout its history, the market has been expanded and rebuilt in the French architectural style, most notably the ancient clock tower inaugurated in 1938.

In the past, the market embodied the traditional character of Southern Vietnam. Besides the bustling atmosphere of hundreds of stalls, people used to exchange bamboo toothpicks, sweets, fabrics, and local specialties right on boats along the riverbank. The market’s buildings are rectangular, comprising three main areas: the Commercial area (selling fabrics, clothing, and jewelry), the Food Court area (serving local specialties and street food), and the Clock Market with its towering clock tower. It also holds many cultural memories from the past through traditional Southern Vietnamese folk songs, proverbs, and folk sayings, reflecting the vibrant market life and close-knit community spirit.

Today, Thu Dau Mot Market remains a crucial commercial center in the Ho Chi Minh City area. The market operates 24/7, bustling from 6 am to 8 pm. During the day, stalls offer a wide variety of fresh produce, seafood, household goods, fashion items, and souvenirs; at night, many areas around the market transform into food streets with hundreds of delicious dishes from all three regions of Vietnam. The most prominent is the Clock Market area, with its ancient clock tower and stalls illuminated by dazzling lights, creating a magical nighttime atmosphere.

The market’s infrastructure has also been improved: clean tiled courtyards, wide walkways, convenient parking, and many amenities for visitors. The market is planned into clearly defined functional zones, both honoring the old architecture and ensuring modern conveniences. More than just a shopping destination, the market is also a unique cultural attraction, helping visitors learn more about the history and life of the local people. With its important role in economic and cultural life, Thu Dau Mot Market continues to contribute to promoting the unique identity of Binh Duong to the world.
